Chapter 37: Reunion...of Sorts

Reunion…of Sorts

“Where the hell have you been?” This was my opening statement to Roger. “Do you try to piss me off? Give me a heart attack?”

“No, baby. I’m sorry. Listen, I love you, and I have to go in just a minute. I will explain later when I call you back.” There was a lot of static in the background, and I could tell he was almost ready to lose the connection.

“Okay…I can’t yell at you now?” I asked him, almost disappointed. A feeling of relief also flooded through me. He wasn’t dead. Or in jail.

“No. What are you doing today? So I know when to get in touch with you?” He asked. I looked at my watch and brushed my hair, getting ready for work. I reached for a pair of socks lying on top of my dresser as I answered his question.

“Going to a meeting at work from two until three, and then working three to five. I’ll take a break around four, if you want me to call you back.”

“I will probably be busy. I’ll talk to you a little bit later, okay?”

“Okay…where are you?”

“Again, I’ll explain everything later. I’m really busy right now. I just called during my one free moment to say I love you.” He was shouting over the din behind him.

“I love you too.” It sounded like he was at some sort of convention. He had mentioned a convention his employer had wanted to send him to. Maybe he had just exhausted himself and passed out without calling me for…five days.

“Bye, baby.”

“Bye.”
